Step 1 — Powerlessness
“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Step One is not a statement of weakness. It is the first honest thing many of us have said in years — and it is the foundation on which everything else is built.

Before we begin Step 1
Starting here takes real courage. Most people fight this step for months or years before they can truly mean it. What makes Step One different from every resolution, promise, or attempt you have made before is this: you are not being asked to try harder. You are being asked to stop trying to control what you have already proven you cannot control. That is a completely different thing. I remember sitting where you are sitting — convinced that if I just found the right combination of willpower and strategy, I could drink like normal people. The Big Book calls this the great obsession. Let us talk about yours.
