Step 12 — Spiritual Awakening

“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”

Step Twelve is both the destination and the beginning. Having received something, you are now asked to give it away — because that is, paradoxically, the only way to keep it.

You have worked the twelve steps. Something has changed in you. It may have arrived quietly — as a gradual shift in how you see the world, how you respond to difficulty, how you feel about yourself and others. Or it may have come more suddenly. Either way, the Big Book has a name for it: a spiritual awakening. And now it asks one thing of you: pass it on. The program survives because people who have been given something turn around and give it to the next person. You are part of that chain now.
