Step 2Came to Believe

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

🌱Foundational·Faith and doubt can coexist here. Take your time. Come back to this step throughout your recovery.

Step Two does not ask you to believe in God. It asks you to believe that something outside your own thinking might be able to help — which, given where your own thinking has led, is not a very large leap.

Before we begin Step 2

Step Two trips up more people than almost any other — especially the most intelligent and analytical ones who feel they have already thought this through completely. The irony is that the very mind that got you here is the mind that will resist this step most strongly. What I want you to notice is the word 'came.' Came to believe. Past tense, arrived at gradually. Nobody is asking you to believe anything right now. They are asking whether you can stay open to the possibility.
