Step 4 — Inventory
“Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.”
The Fourth Step is an act of honesty so thorough that it frightens most people before they begin. That fear is worth examining — because it usually means you are on the right track.

Before we begin Step 4
More people get sober and then get stuck at Step Four than at any other step. The prospect of writing everything down — resentments, fears, all of it — can feel overwhelming or even dangerous. I want to tell you something important: the inventory does not create the damage. The damage is already there. The inventory reveals it so we can do something about it. What you are most afraid to write down is exactly what needs to be written down. The Big Book compares this to a business taking stock — not to feel bad about what is in the stockroom, but to know exactly what is there so we can deal with it clearly.
